NAC Pro Life Holy Hour
Rev. Mr. John A Sistare
10/29/99

The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us (his) flesh to eat?" Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever." These things he said while teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum. (Jn 6: 52-59)

"It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood, a wonderful day for this neighbor, would you be mine? Could you be mine? Won’t you be…my neighbor?

Yes, my friends, these are the opening lines of Mr. Roger’s neighborhood, a show that entertained so many of us as children. If you remember, every show a little tune would play and out would come Mr. Trolley and off we went to the Land of Make Believe. The Land of Make Believe!!!

In today’s Gospel, many people were also living in the Land of Make Believe. Jesus presents them with a reality. "For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." He was saying that this is the real deal, what you see is what you get. You want eternal life then here’s the conditions, you must eat my flesh and drink my blood. Instead, many of the disciples there decided to walk away and go on living in the Land of Make Believe. Notice he doesn’t say come on back guys, I was only joking. No way, face reality or hit the road!

Unfortunately, so many people 2000 years later are also in the Land of Make Believe. Let’s take just the example of abortion, since this is a pro life holy hour…

First of all, many pretend or make believe that what’s growing inside the womb of a pregnant woman is a "clump of tissue", a "potential child", or even termed, "products of reproduction". So many in the abortion industry, such as planned parenthood prefer these terms when speaking to pregnant woman, because this way it is much easier to sell their services. They remain in the Land of Make Believe and ignore reality. The reality, which common sense, logic, reason and every bit of scientific evidence, based on a single DNA strand, tells us that within the pregnant woman is a human life. A baby lives and grows in what should be the safest place to be, inside the womb of the mother.

Just another example… planned parenthood and other abortion providers, would like everyone to believe that they are helping women and we pro lifers are against women, only thinking of the children in the wombs. In the Land of Make Believe, they are the heroes. In fact, this past summer, I had an unpleasant breakfast as I read an article in my state paper in which the columnist referred to a local abortion provider as a hero! Welcome to the Land of Make Believe!!! The very place the abortions occur are called clinics, which means a place of healing, but there are no healings there. Two patients enter and one comes out alive, how is that a healing? The real ones helping are the pro lifers who give up there mornings to peacefully pray & counsel outside the abortion mills. The ones who offer services, counseling and financial aid to women thinking they have no choice at all. The ones like yourselves, brothers, who are praying for these women here at this holy hour. The reality, is that the abortion providers are interested in one thing, the almighty dollar and afterwards they are no where to be found when post abortion problems occur. And they do occur…emotional, psychological and physical problems inevitably arise, as they should whenever a death has occurred.

The very term "pro choice" is from the Land of Make Believe. Every choice needs an object, to choose what? Every morning, I love to make the choice to eat either Rice Krispies or All Bran. It’s not much of a choice, but I still have the choice as well as consequences of that decision! Choice sounds so nice and it is for us creatures with free will, but when the choice is to end the life of another innocent human being, then we have a big problem and that problem is sin!

So, as Fathers and future fathers, where does this all leave us? We are called to face reality ourselves. That means that we need to face the reality that we will be Fathers! Every father of a family needs to love his children as well as teach them right from wrong. We will be called to bring the reality to our future parishioners and make them aware of sin. However, more importantly, we will be called to bring the reality of forgiveness which is offered to anyone who asks for it, even one who has procured or was involved in an abortion. We will be called to take those in the Land of Make Believe and bring them to Jesus’ neighborhood, the world of reality. A world where he offers himself, body and blood, soul and divinity. May we always bring the reality of Jesus in the Eucharist to our people, so that they may one day have eternal life.
